Congress Isn't Broken
I hear dozens of political pundits constantly saying that “Congress is broken.” This former elected officer of the United States Senate would beg to differ with that general premise. While onlookers might observe that Congress looks like it does nothing but spin its wheels most of the time, it is actually working as it is designed to work…with the Leadership and members that are serving in the current 112th Congress.
The House of Representatives has passed over 30 pieces of job creating legislation that is sitting in the United States Senate...doing nothing. They have never been called up for a vote in the Senate.
At the same time, the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has blocked the Minority party in the Senate from offering alternatives to any given piece of legislation more than the last 3 Republican Leaders did while they served as the Majority Leader. Only Senator Reid has used this procedure, known as “filling the amendment tree” more than the last 3 Republican Majority Leaders…combined.
Abusing power or really abusing anything leads to bad results. But it doesn’t always mean the system is broken. When we hear that a particular person weighs more than 300 pounds, we don’t assume that their body is broken. Rather, what usually is the culprit is the fact that the person is abusing his or her body by eating too much.
This abuse of power in Congress can be rectified. It’s called elections. Remember, democracy is not a spectator sport.
