Robert B's Email to Representative Darren Soto

I gave you a grade of D.  You can significantly increase it by supporting our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arm,s.

Congressman Soto:

As a constituent, I am writing to express my strong opposition to any new gun control that would only impact law-abiding gun owners.    Please stand strong in support of the Second Amendment and oppose all gun control schemes such as waiting periods, universal background checks, “safe storage” laws, age restrictions to purchase firearms, gun bans, ammunition bans, magazine capacity limits, and other senseless legislation that would not have stopped the recent horrific crimes and won't stop the next one.

I am now 65 years old; I have owned AR-15s and/or other functionally equivalent rifles for my entire adult life.  I have conducted myself responsibly and lawfully the entire time.  I have passed 24 background checks for the purpose of gun purchase, three background checks for issuance and renewal of my Florida concealed carry permit, and eight Federal background checks for issuance/renewal of security clearances – a total of at least 35 background checks so far (I may have forgotten a few).  In addition, I am an NRA-certified firearms instructor; I teach safe gun handling to others.  How many more intrusive and demeaning inquisitions must I endure before I am considered worthy to exercise one of my Constitutional rights?  Why are you determined to restrict the freedom of millions of peaceable, responsible citizens?

Punishing law-abiding gun owners for the acts of criminals is both wrong and unjust.  To ban items of private property because criminals, psychos, and terrorists prefer them is to put criminals, psychos, and terrorists in charge of our liberties.  Attacking the Constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners is completely intolerable.  Your oath of office requires you to protect and defend American liberty, not attack and diminish it.

Please support and focus on legislation to protect our communities by eliminating gun-free zones, which are simply low-risk happy hunting grounds for criminals and killers.  Abolish the unconstitutional gun-free zones!  Restore the right of self-defense everywhere in this country!

Always remember: the duty of civil government is not to make us safe, but to keep us free.  Abolishing gun-free zones is the only approach that can accomplish both.

In summary, responding to criminality by abridging the freedom of the law-abiding is almost as unjust and crazy as stealing money from people who have never owned slaves to pay slavery reparations to people who have never been slaves.  I certainly hope you do not support that insane idea.

I look forward to your response and will consider your votes on these important issues the next time I vote at the polls.  If you do not fully support our Second Amendment rights, you will not get my vote – period!

Thank you.
